  • Consolidating multiple offices into one building in San Diego required many things not previously used in designing FBI facilities. One of those challenges was to create a discreet parking facility for up to 400 agents and staff.

    One of the primary components of the design was to create a facade which reduced and or prohibited people seeing directly into the parking structure in the daytime. The FBI wanted the ability to move agents, guests and others in and out of the facility with some anonymity.

    Soltis FT 381: a perforated composite membrane with multiple uses.

    With its 20% porosity, Soltis FT 381 maintains an excellent outward visibility while behaving like an opaque visual barrier when looking from the outside during daylight hours. Soltis FT composite material effectively prohibits people seeing into the parking structure during daytime business hours.

    Offering great flexibility and lightness, this Serge Ferrari-designed material transforms itself, as soon as it is tensioned into a veritable shield ensuring long-term resistance to UV, bad weather, and stunning visual impressions.

    The colors were chosen by the design team and the GSA to not only prohibit the view from the exterior but to also look good: a harmony of light grey, anthracite grey and green were chosen from Soltis 381 FT 27 color palette to optimize the integration of the building with the site and its natural environment. By lighting it up from the front at night, the facility blends very well into the area. SOLTIS FT 381 was also chosen due to its exceptional durability over time in high UV environments.

    In total, 4500 m2 of Soltis FT 381 perforated membrane were installed on frames to clad the building facades and to ensure the parking natural ventilation.

    100 % recyclable, Soltis FT limits the environmental impact;
